What is CBD for Pets? The title may seem self-explanatory, but if you’re new to the world of CBD, you’ll be surprised to learn that it exists for pets as well. Put simply, CBD for pets is a range of pet products infused with a specially formulated CBD extract.

The products are constantly growing, however, common items include CBD oil, CBD lozenges, and CBD snacks. Although CBD products for pets still use CBD as their main ingredient, there are some minor differences to the formula of CBD products intended for humans.

We’ll cover these differences in more detail shortly, but it’s important to note that unless a CBD product claims it’s exclusively for pets, it won’t be suitable for your cat or dog.

How does CBD work for pets? To understand how CBD works for pets, it is essential to know how cannabinoids (the group of molecules to which CBD belongs) interact with their biological systems in general.

Fortunately, there are several similarities between our physiology and that of our four-legged friends. Your pet also possesses an endocannabinoid system (SEC), a vast network of receptors that monitors well-being. When consumed as oil or snack, CBD is processed by your pet’s digestive system and liver and then distributed throughout the body.

The SEC reacts to the presence of CBD and other cannabinoids and can trigger a wide range of potential outcomes — just as it does in humans. Researchers are still exploring the full scope of the SEC in dogs and cats, but have so far discovered the following:

• Dogs and cats have CB1 and CB2 receptors • CB1 receptors have been discovered in the salivary glands, hair follicles, skin, and parts of the brain • Most CB2 receptors are present on your pet’s skin
• Some CB receptors appear to have a similar function to receptors found in humans and rodents

Are the effects of CBD the same for both humans and pets?

The last point we have highlighted is important. Some CB receptors present in pets have a function similar to that of the receptors present in our body.

This means that there is likely to be a meeting point between how we feel when we take CBD and the impact it has on our four-legged friends.

Researchers believe that stimulating the dogs’ SEC could suppress pro-inflammatory cells, supporting overall skin and joint health.

Additionally, there is some evidence to suggest a link between CBD intake and neurological conditions.

Studies show similar results in cats as well. CBD appears to affect joint and skin health, as well as some oral conditions. Interestingly, research on CB1 receptors shows that CBD can affect muscle function — a different result than the dog studies we mentioned earlier.
